Vemma Mangosteen Plus™

What is mangosteen?

Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.), known as the “Queen of Tropical Fruits,” is considered to be one of the best tasting fruits in the world. This rare fruit, when ripe, is about the size of a mandarin orange, has a juicy white flesh and is encased in a thick reddish-purple rind. The fruit itself is sweet with a hint of acidity, often described as having a deep grape/strawberry-like flavor that melts in the mouth. Those who have had the privilege of tasting this unique fruit have characterized it as heavenly and indescribably delicious!

Where is mangosteen originally from?

Mangosteen’s exact place of origin is unknown; however, it is native to both Malaysia and Indonesia.

Where is mangosteen currently being cultivated?

Mangosteen cultivation is currently limited to Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, India, the Philippines and other warm, tropical countries. It has remained primarily in Southeast Asia partly due to its strict climatic requirements and the fact that the fruit, although encased in a thick rind, remains edible for only a short period of time. In addition to that, mangosteen seeds are difficult to plant because they quickly lose their viability. Consequently, the number of trees that get successfully cultivated every year is very low. There have been attempts to cultivate mangosteen in Hawaii, however, the tree has not become well acclimated and is somewhat limited there.

Does mangosteen fruit grow on a tree or a bush?

Mangosteen fruit grows on one of the slowest growing and longest living tropical trees. Mangosteen trees thrive in ultra-tropical climates with high atmospheric humidity. They have a high straight trunk and symmetrically arranged branches which form the shape of a pyramid at the top. The leaves on the tree are dark green and shiny. A seedling tree usually grows about 10-15 years before it yields fruit.

Once a tree has matured, when is the fruit harvested?

When the fruit has a color change from green to reddish-pink, it is ready to be picked. Although the mangosteen has a fairly thick rind, it needs to be handled carefully to prevent it from becoming damaged. After it has been harvested and the color changes to a dark violet, it is ready to be eaten.

How often is mangosteen fruit harvested and how many fruits does one tree produce?

Mangosteen fruit gets harvested from a mature tree twice a year. The number of fruit can vary per tree. Mature trees can yield anywhere from 400 - 900 fruit.

Is mangosteen used for anything other than partaking in the enjoyment of it as a fresh fruit?

Mangosteen is a versatile fruit. In addition to being consumed fresh, it can be processed into delicious jams, juices, preserves and candies.

Why has mangosteen recently come to the attention of a wider audience around the world?

Many of the traditional natural healers of Southeast Asia have taken advantage of the beneficial properties of mangosteen for hundreds of years. It has been utilized for numerous health supporting benefits, and westerners who are educated about Asian healing traditions have recently begun to share their knowledge with the rest of the world.

Does mangosteen possess health-promoting properties?

The modern scientific/nutrition community has recently concluded, through its research, that mangosteen does possess beneficial health-promoting properties. These properties are in the form of beneficial compounds potentially capable of providing a wide spectrum of health benefits.

What are these compounds?

These compounds are called xanthones. Xanthones are a newly-discovered class of plant nutrients that are highly, biologically active. They are unique because they possess very potent antioxidant capabilities.

What are antioxidants and why are they important?

Antioxidants are nutrients that protect cells from oxidative damage resulting from the presence of free radicals. Free radicals are unstable oxygen molecules that attack stable molecules and wreak havoc within the body. They occur in the body when we overexert ourselves, when we get exposed to pollution or intake chemicals from processed foods and other impurities in our environment.

How many xanthones are in mangosteen?

Over 30 different xanthones have been identified in mangosteen. Many of these xanthones have been investigated through research, and their ability to positively impact the quality of life has been shown.

Does the entire fruit contain nutrients?

The pulp of the fruit contains vitamins such as vitamin C and minerals such as calcium and phosphorus. The rind of the fruit, known as the pericarp, is particularly rich in valuable xanthones.

How can I obtain mangosteen fruit?

Because fresh mangosteen fruit is not readily available in the United States, the best way to take advantage of its numerous health benefits is to purchase it as a dietary supplement. Vemma’s Mangosteen Plus™ provides an excellent source of mangosteen.

What does Aloe Vera contribute to Mangosteen Plus™?

Aloe vera is a plant that originated in Africa and has been used for centuries because of its versatility and life supporting properties. Recent scientific research studies have suggested that aloe vera may have the ability to have a positive impact on a wide variety of health functions that people were not aware of pre-modern science.* In addition to that, many of aloe vera’s traditional uses as remedies have been supported by modern science.* The gel from the inside of the plant is comprised of several important constituents including beneficial minerals, vitamins and polysaccharides. Adding such multi-faceted benefits from one of the world’s most succulent plants to one’s daily dietary regime can only have a positive impact.

Why is Green Tea included in Mangosteen Plus™?

Green Tea is well-studied and documented for its traditional use and healing ability. In addition to containing vitamins and minerals, green tea possesses numerous compounds that have antioxidant and health-enhancing properties. One of the main compounds is the bioflavinoid catechin. It works both alone and in conjunction with other flavonoids found in the tea, and has both defense supporting and free radical scavenging properties. Decaffeinated green tea is added to Vemma’s Mangosteen Plus™ for additional antioxidant power.

“Mangosteen extract has multiple health benefits. This simple fact is both its greatest asset and its greatest liability. Unfortunately, many people will never try it because of its claims of effects across the full spectrum of health illnesses. They say, ‘No one product can do all that!’ But my patients know better.
